History

Together in September 1983 Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh agus 17 junior infant pupils and their parents started Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin in Cúl Rua on the west side of Baile an Chollaigh above a local shop. The school grew and flourished steadily over the following three decades. Now in September 2016 there are 708 pupils on the school roll with a staff of 35 teachers and 6 Special Needs Assistants.hqdefault

On Tuesday November 6, 2012, after years of campaigning, 530 happy pupils, along with staff and hundreds of parents, bid farewell to the old rented school building at Cúl Rua and walked the 3km journey to our new building at Carraig an Earra.

This was a joyous and momentous occasion as we wound our way through the beautiful village of Baile an Chollaigh. Shopkeepers, shoppers and onlookers alike wished us well as we finally locked the doors of our rented accommodation, which had been our home for the past 29 years.

Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin is named after the late poet Seán Ó Ríordáin,who lived in Inis Cara, and who wrote the beautiful poem ‘Ar Cúl an Tí’. The first verse of the poem is in the childrens’ school diaries referring to the land of Tír na n-Óg.
